As is the case with many others across the country, Cincinnati-based musician J. Stout had the ground pulled out from under him over the last year. The progress of his band, Sleepy Drums, hit a brick wall as gig opportunities became non-existent and the safety of band rehearsals, and any other social gatherings for that matter, became questionable. However, instead of wallowing in disappointment, the musicians making up the Lo Fi City Recording collective retreated back to do what they do best- write and make home recordings. For J. Stout it meant finally finishing his follow up to 2017’s Spacer.

Originally designed to be a Robert Pollard style collage of field recordings and voice memos, he eventually realized that the album had the capability of being more.

“The more I listened to it I realized that there were actually some pretty good songs but the overall impact of the album was being dulled by the experimental filler,” Stout explains.

After whittling it down to the most cohesive tracklist, he decided to add extra guitar instrumentation to a couple tracks.

“I had originally only planned to add lead parts to a couple songs, but I repeatedly found that adding extra instrumentation improved and strengthened the songs’ overall quality,” expresses Stout.

Stout thereby selected a grouping of electric and acoustic guitars he hadn’t played in awhile and experimented with a few new pedals to get unique lead tones for every track.

“In the end I feel like it’s just as much of a guitar album as a lyrical album,” Stout recounts, “I’m very proud of the tones and lead melodies I came with. They really took the album to the next level and added richness and texture.”

Lyrically, the album focuses on real life experiences and is a reflection upon the last five years of Stout’s life, as well as the growing turmoil of American life in general. Covering topics ranging from social and political unrest, parenthood, the loss of loved ones and the strains upon lasting relationships, Stout doesn’t stray from approaching both the widely relatable and the highly personal.

“Many of these songs were recorded shortly after they were written and haven’t been performed since,” Stout says of his process. “Just as some people will write in a journal, or paint a picture, as a way to vent or as a form of therapy, I’ll often write a song. If I’m just trying to get a feeling out of my system, I’ll usually be fulfilled after the song has been recorded and don’t always feel a need to play it again.”
